By Nicholas Pileggi. IN an year-old of Irish-Sicilian parentage walked across the street from where he lived in Brooklyn into a dingy, mob-run cab company looking for after-school work.
His energy, intelligence and what seems to have been a general likableness quickly started him on his way to becoming the kind of tough thief New Yorkers euphemistically call a ''wise guy. He eventually became one of a group who, in his words, ''walked in a room and the place stopped. Everyone knew who we were, and we were treated like movie stars with muscle. Hill's version of the American dream is told in ''Wise Guy'' by Nicholas Pileggi, a contributing editor of New York magazine, who has covered crime and politics for many years.
He is working here with rich material and fascinating characters. For example, Mr. And Mr. Pileggi molds Mr. Hill's life story into an absolutely engrossing book that rings with authenticity. This is not one more self-serving account by an organized crime figure whose claim to book royalties is the heights to which he rose in ''this thing of ours'' before being forced by dishonorable associates to enter the Federal Witness Protection Program.
Hill is a find, a bona fide wise guy who generally ''earned'' at street level but who had unusual access to high-level crime bosses. In those parts of the book where he speaks for himself, he does so with the dispassionate voice of a born observer who prefers to describe the details and recall the prevailing mood rather than convince the reader of his own stand-up behavior.
Hill's story goes nonstop. We learn that the energy level and entrepreneurial drive required to be a successful wise guy is staggering. Organized crime may be the last bastion of the American work ethic. As a teen-ager Mr. Burke, with whom he would remain friends for 25 years - until Mr. Burke wanted to kill him after the Lufthansa holdup. In his early 20's, Mr. Hill did a stint as a maitre d' in a fancy Rockaway, Queens, restaurant owned by Gaetano Three Fingers Brown Lucchese, brought up trailer loads of contraband cigarettes from North Carolina, shipped stolen cars to Haiti, participated in race-track scams, hijacked trucks, fenced jewels.
While under Paul Vario's wing, Mr. Hill worked his way up. Along the way, he married Karen, a middle-class Jewish woman from Long Island with whom he raised two children and for whom he underwent circumcision at the age of 22, a decision that leads one to sense in him a mild streak of eccentricity by the standards of Brooklyn wise guys. The crimes that awaited the mature Mr.
Hill included bribing Boston College basketball players to shave points Rick Kuhn, the team captain, was sentenced to 10 years for it , drug dealing that caused Mr. Vario to tearfully write him off, the mundane labor of first burying then later digging up the body of a racketeer killed in a Queens Boulevard lounge and, his crowning achievement, Lufthansa.
Twelve people were murdered because of the Lufthansa robbery, and the surviving actors in the drama are in prison -with the exception of one man. Hill remains both alive and relatively free. As a participant in the Witness Protection Program, he is on the Government's payroll. Several things set ''Wise Guy'' apart from books about such organized crime figures as Joseph Valachi or James Fratiano.
Hill was a member of Mr. Burke's crew, none of whom were ''made,'' or formal, members of an organized crime family. They worked for Mr. Vario and never sat through the kind of corporate meetings familiar to us from ''The Godfather. Hill and his friends were outlaws, different from Mario Puzo's nine-to-five company men. Indeed, much of Mr. Hill's experience seems to have been with disorganized crime. Also, Mr. Pileggi's writing is refreshingly direct, without the inflated prose and moral posturing that usually infect stories about criminals.
The book's structure - Mr. Hill speaks for himself some of the time and his wife also has her say, generally on the same events we have just heard about from him - is especially effective. It reads so effortlessly that it might be mistaken for an easy performance.
Those are the ones that require the most skill. In his first conversation with Henry Hill, Mr. Pileggi knew he had found his subject.
Pileggi recalled in a telephone interview from his office in Manhattan. The liaison between Mr. Hill, a career criminal, and Mr. Pileggi began in Hill, facing a life sentence on a narcotics charge, opted for the Government's Witness Protection Program and testifying against his former pals. It was Mr.
For two years Mr. Pileggi talked almost daily on the telephone with Mr. He also debriefed him in prosecutors' offices in New York and in hotel rooms, restaurants, cars and parks in various Middle Western cities. As part of the witness program, Mr. Hill has been given a false identity, and Mr. Pileggi is unaware of his new name or where he lives. Pileggi, who will be 53 next month, grew up in Brooklyn and wanted to teach literature, but a copy boy's job at The Associated Press lured him into journalism.
