Relational Patterns Associated with Sexual Sadism: A Study of 20 Wives and Girlfriends
Warner Brothers Science can't say whether people in your life are good or evil, per se. But it's getting better at figuring out whether they enjoy hurting you.
A fairly new field in personality research studies "misanthropic" traits: characteristics that lead people to hurt those around them for their own benefit. And psychologists have established a " dark triad " of harmful personality traits: narcissism, psychopathy or a lack of empathy , and Machiavellianism or a tendency to manipulate others.
Any one of these traits makes a person stressful to those around them. Taken together they add up to an " antagonistic and selfish " strategy for getting ahead at other people's expense. Now, some researchers suggest a fourth trait should join the triad: sadism, or joy in inflicting pain on others. Sadism is a term with a long history. Sadists take pleasure in hurting other people. They're our most fearsome and evil villains — whether real or imagined, like Ramsay Bolton of "Game of Thrones.
But the idea of sadism is fairly new to clinical settings. That's in part because the whole study of personality, and specifically of "dark" personality traits, is fairly recent and underdeveloped.
But it's also because traits like sadism, along with the rest of the dark triad, are difficult to tease apart with clinical precision. Even papers that support the idea of sadism as part of a larger "dark tetrad" acknowledge that its effects can be difficult to distinguish from the three existing triad traits. But a growing body of work in just the last few years has shown that sadism correlates specifically and strongly with cruel behavior — for example, trolling and cyberbullying.
In order to develop a rigorous test for sadism, researchers assembled a list of questions designed to poke right at the heart of a sadistic personality. The first version was 20 questions long. Subjects were asked to say how strongly they agreed or disagreed with a list of rather chilling statements, using a scale from one to five.
One meant completely disagree and five completely agree. The test, researchers found, was good at measuring sadism and dark triad traits. And it suggested that there were specific and interpretable patterns in people's misanthropic personalities. But it didn't as good a job as they'd hoped in identifying sadism as separate from psychopathy and the rest of the dark tried.
So they weeded out questions that might have caused too much overlap and tried again with a nine-question version of the test:. This time, when students took the test, the results were stronger. It still correlated with other dark triad traits like psychopathy as expected, but did a better job of showing that sadism is a separate category. In both tests, men scored much more highly than women for the negative traits.
These results were published the journal Personality and Individual Differences. The researchers note that there's a lot more work to do on what they're calling the Assessment of Sadistic Personality ASP , including finding subjects who aren't college undergrads taking questionnaires for course credit not the most diverse or representative sample.
But they expect it will play a significant role as they come to understand sadism in clinical terms. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. Scientists developed this 9-question test to measure how sadistic someone is
This study is derived from in-depth interviews with 20 wives or girlfriends of sexually sadistic males. The study was designed to explore the sexual preferences of sexually sadistic males in terms of their consensual sexual relationships and to examine the dynamics by which they introduce their partners into extreme and, at times, murderous forms of behavior. Previous research has demonstrated that although sexually sadistic criminals are often forthcoming about their criminal and murderous behavior, they become misleading and vague when describing the sexual fantasy and pattern of arousal that underlie these activities. The search for secondary sources of information, such as diaries, manuscripts, videos, and photographs, that might further illustrate these preferences and fantasies resulted in the interviews summarized in this paper.
People with sadistic personality traits tend to be aggressive, but only enjoy their aggressive acts if it harms their victims. According to a series of studies of over people, these actions ultimately leave sadists feeling worse than they felt before their aggressive act. In the real world, sadists might be someone bullying others to feel better, or a group of sports fans looking for rival fans to fight for the "excitement" of it. In a lab setting, the scientists gauged people's aggressive and sadistic tendencies by measuring participant's likelihood to seek vengeance or to harm an innocent person.
Aggressive behavior brings emotional pain to the sadist
That boss who seems to love chewing out his underlings in front of the entire team? Alongside everyday sadism, Dark Tetrad personalities include narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. These individuals may be malevolent, but not so much that their day-to-day functioning is impeded or that they will land in prison or a psych ward. Narcissists too excel. Their tendency toward impulsiveness can seem like creativity, and their cool confidence often make excellent impressions on interviewers and superiors. Though effective psychopathic personalities carefully project a winning image to their superiors, eventually their abuse of their peers and subordinates surfaces. They eagerly exploit suckers and have no qualms about making themselves look good. They flourish in workplaces with looser organizational structures. Their disdain for rules ends up embroiling Machiavellian folks in corporate malfeasance and white-collar crime. Jones points to research showing that in a gambling game stacked against winning, while Machiavellian and psychopathic personalities took risks more often, narcissistic folks lost more money overall.

Everyday Sadists Take Pleasure In Others’ Pain
Most of the time, we try to avoid inflicting pain on others — when we do hurt someone, we typically experience guilt, remorse, or other feelings of distress. But for some, cruelty can be pleasurable, even exciting. New research suggests that this kind of everyday sadism is real and more common than we might think.
